The main character seems to have magical abilities that are significantly greater than those he had in the original, thus this isn't really a "Leprechaun" sequel; rather, it's more of a "Nightmare on Elm Street" want tobe. There are some insultingly idiotic moments in this meaner and gorier but also much more foolish movie (particularly the two "red herrings", which may make you stop watching it right then and there).
